Crean Challenge 2025: Report by Alex Betson

For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved a challenge. That’s why, when I got the chance to apply for the Crean Challenge, I knew I had to go for it!!

This is one of Scouting Ireland’s toughest programs, designed for Scouts aged 13 to 15, and inspired by the legendary Irish explorer Tom Crean. It’s not just a test of physical endurance, it’s about leadership, teamwork, and pushing yourself beyond what you think you’re capable of. Thirty two (32) scouts were chosen from National Scout Troops after an application process which included a CV, personal video and a scout group leader recommendation.  

The journey started in September 2024, with intense preparation with the leaders and bonding with the other 31 scouts from all over Ireland. I have now made friends for life with some of those scouts.

We trained in navigation, hill walking, first aid, and survival skills, including 4 self-planned training hikes in Leinster and 4 training weekends with the whole team. The hikes included summiting the peaks of Galtymore in Tipperary and Carrauntoohil in Kerry in preparation for the final expedition.

The Tom Crean Challenge took place over the week of the February mid-term break, immersed in Iceland’s rugged and unpredictable terrain. 🇮🇸

Our expedition was made all the more special as we spent the week alongside 16 Icelandic Scouts. We all enjoyed a cultural exchange, trading Bodhráns, Irish Dancing and Tayto Crisps 🇮🇪 in return for local delicacies of Shark, Sheep Colon and Blood Sausage. 🇮🇸

One of the unexpected highlights of the trip was on the first night, seeing the best display of Northern Lights that the Icelandic scouts had ever experienced.

It was a tough week, but every step of the way has made me more prepared, more confident and a more independent individual.

The trip required a large investment in state of the art hiking and camping gear. It wouldn’t have been possible without all the support I got from the Gleann na Boinne, County Team and the 1st Meath Dunboyne Scouts who contributed towards the cost of the expedition. They have been training me since I started in Cubs. I’m also grateful for the Meindl boots and Rab jacket provided by 53° North Blanchardstown.

Thank you to my family and friends for their donations and support and also my scouting friends, who made this expedition possible, ensuring an unforgettable, once in a life-time memory.
