Mweelrea – 4 Peaks Challenge 🏔️

As part of the annual 4 Peaks Challenge our intrepid Ventures group headed west to Connaught on to take on the mighty mountain that is Mweelrea, the highest peak in in Connaught.

Upon arrival on the Friday evening, we set up camp on the sands of Silver Strand, a beautiful beach beneath the imposing shadows of Mweelrea, all whilst battling howling winds whipping in off the wild Atlantic.

We woke early the next morning, had breakfast and broke camp before hitting the trail head at 8:45am.

Although the day began dry, the weather in the West of Ireland never fails to deliver. Rain came in regular intervals but didn’t break the resolve of our intrepid explorers.

The initial path soon gave way to boggy terrain, so the group reverted to hand-railing one of a few re-entrants to a clear path that lead to the Coll.

Once at the Coll, we checked our location on the map and snacked before the making the final 800 metres assault to the summit. As always, Mweelrea was covered in its seemingly near constant cloud cover, nevertheless the ventures continued on and quickly summited.

Unfortunately there were no views and the cold bite to the weather meant it was a few quick selfies before turning heel and heading back to the Coll for lunch.

After lunch, badges were awarded to all by Kevin from Navan before we quickly descended the mountain in record time.

Back at the carpark, thoughts soon turned to the following weekend where the 4th and final  challenge takes place in Kerry.

Stay tuned for more folks……..!!
